Prior to studying Painting /Fine Art academically at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, at age 25, Leslie first graduated with undergraduate degrees in Art History and English Literature from The University of Pennsylvania. After working as an Acquisitions Editor in the Publishing Industry with Prentice-Hall Publishers, for three years, (1981-1984 ) she returned to graduate school in Philadelphia at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts to study Painting for four years in the Certificate Program, which later became the MFA Program at U of P. During that time at PAFA, she researched the Collection on a part time basis in the Museum of American Art at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and worked for Barbara Wallace & Associates Art Consultants, selling fine art to corporations.

After completing her studies at PAFA, Leslie managed a Native American Art Gallery in Chestnut Hill, (Philadelphia), PA. which led to her managing what was then called The Art Sales & Rental Gallery at Philadelphia Museum of Art, (now Artworks Gallery) where she developed corporate art collections for numerous companies in the Philadelphia region 1991-2000

Lois Ehrin:

As an Artist, I love to paint. I seek out the beauty and serenity that nature offers us in order to sensitize us to the everyday gentle offerings that surround us but that we often overlook. Amidst so much disregard of our natural resources, I feel a need to paint the wild places, supporting their protection by communicating their unique pristine excellence.

Traveling to new destinations, looking at new scenery, jump-starts my inspiration to paint. Memorable journeys, meeting delightful people in new and beautiful places such as the lake country in England, London at night, the charm of Cotswold’s Villages and Sweden’s Dalarna region, distant Scottish highland castles, and the unspoiled beauty of America’s western National Parks, the Canadian Rockies and Alaska’s monumental frontiers added to my wealth of familiar subjects in Pennsylvania’s hills.

On a year sabbatical from teaching, I traveled and painted in France, in the inspirational places that enticed the French impressionists. I happily sketched and painted in Van Gogh’s Arles in the spring, and Monet’s water gardens in Giverney in Normandy.

In mid-summer I traveled to Southern France, painting in rural Provence’s purple lavender and golden sunflower fields and the colorful little fishing village of Collioure– near the French Pyrenees. With my paint brushes and canvases as a source of international delightful communication, I enjoyed the best of France’s beauty and met wonderful people and was able to complete many paintings depicting France.

First Friday August 7 5-8pm at The Great Frame Up in...

First Friday August 7 5-8pm at The Great Frame Up in Wayne

“I’ve been an artist ever since I could hold a crayon…however, it’s only since 2001 that I decided to quit my job as a biochemist and devote all my time to art. It was then that I started painting murals, commissioned paintings and exploring my own self-expression in acrylics and oils. My ongoing education is sought through books, magazines, and plain ol’ brush mileage. The thing I love the most about painting is simply playing with paint, mixing it, pushing it around the canvas and experimenting. To me it’s very meditative and relaxing. I think it’s a doorway to spirituality and find myself drawn to subjects that elicit a peaceful energy in me. My ultimate intention is for my work to elicit similar feelings in the viewer. This is my small way of making the world a better place.” -John Pompeo

What is Plein Air…?

Painting outdoors or en plein air began in 19th century Europe, when Englishman John Constable and the French Barbizon painters sought to depict everyday subjects in their natural settings. Using sketches made directly in the field, these Realists inspired the Impressionists, who sought to convey light with color. Today, painting from life is a pursuit that continues to challenge the finest artists in the world.

About the Juror: John Poon

Encouraged by the wealth of landscape and artist interpretation in the Bay Area and with such early experiences as Van Gogh’s exhibition at De Young Museum in San Francisco, John’s appreciation of art emerged at an early age.

A childhood full of drawing and painting foreshadowed an artistic future: after completing four years in the U.S. Coast Guard, he attended and graduated from the Academy of Art College (AAC) in San Francisco, winning numerous student awards and scholarships.

After graduation, John accepted the AAC’s offer to remain at the college as an instructor of painting and drawing, and eventually served as Director of Foundations overseeing all Freshmen Drawing, and Color and Design classes.

His philosophy is solid: he believes in the importance of an academic grounding in basic principles of art and adheres strongly to the classical premises of art education. He values his teaching and administrative experiences as having increased his perspective as an educator and artist.

John’s works reflect his inspired appreciation of the landscape. His paintings can be found in numerous private collections across the country. He is represented by Fairmont Gallery in Sonoma, CA; The Garden Gallery in Half Moon Bay, California; The Legacy Gallery in Jackson, WY; and The Walls Gallery in Wilmington, North Carolina.

His numerous professional awards and honors include “Best of Show” Society of Western Artists; Arts for the Parks Annual National Juried Exhibition; The Artist Magazine Annual National Juried Competition; The Sonoma Plein Air, Sedona Plein Air; and The Rocky Mountain Annual Plein Air Paint Out.

John lives in Liberty, UT with his wife Jenny, their six children, and Spike the cat.

We are proud to offer Nurre Caxton’s EcoCare - a line of moulding that’s easy on the eyes and the planet. All woods are harvested from managed forests…areas that are carefully monitored, controlled and grown using a host of modern forestry techniques. This assures our forests will continue to provide clean air and water, stunning scenery, home for wildlife and jobs. The colors of Sherwood and Blackwood are achieved with organic, water based stains. These stains allow for the beauty of the wood grain to show through. No oils, no chemical solvents are used. Offering EcoCare gives us and our customers a choice they’ll feel good about.

_Not only is Nurre Caxton doing this Larson-Juhl another major moulding manufacturer is as well._ The Great Frame Up is also proud to present a new line of PEFC certified mouldings by Larson-Juhl. The “Biltmore Collection” uses sustainably harvested lumber from Asheville, North Carolina. Designer: Jane Collins
Customer:...

Project of the month: March

Designer: Jane Collins

Customer: Gregory Kane

What is the Project?

Custom framing a WWI “Dough Boy” American helmet that customer wants to take in and out of frame. Helmet needs to be lifted off of the backing in order to take in and out.

What is the Design?

We are going to use a rust color fabric covered panel from Raphael’s with four furniture knobs and a window latch to hold the helmet in place. The suede was chosen for its durability and the hardware and latch provide the ability to remove and replace the helmet.

What is the Frame?

The frame was chosen to have enough mass and presence to carry the weight and “heaviness” of the helmet.

What is the Glazing?

The design does not include glazing to enable the removal of the helmet.

What is the Hardware?

The Hardware was chosen with a color and finish that complemented the helmet from Killian’s Hardware in Chestnut Hill on Germantown Ave. One of the knobs will have the strap draped over it.

History of the “Dough Boy” M-1917 WWI Helmet:

The steel for the M-1917 helmet was rolled by the American sheet and Tin Plate Company. The steel was then pressed and stamped into its bowl shape by several companies one in particular being Edward G Budd Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, PA. Two others companies in New York on each in Michigan and Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois also pressed the steel into helmets. The metal helmets and woven linings were then delivered to the plant at the ford motor company in Philadelphia where they were painted and assembled. The outside surface of the helmet was made to be anti-glare. In order to achieve this they painted the helmet then fine sawdust was blown onto the wet paint, they were left to dry then painted again. To increase protective properties the helmets were painted in an olive drab shade. These helmets could withstand a .45 caliber pistol bullet traveling at 600 feet per second fired at a distance of 10 feet.

10% off Spring Biltmore Collection INSPIRED BY THE QUALITY AND...

10% off Spring Biltmore Collection
INSPIRED BY THE QUALITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP of America’s greatest home, the Biltmore Frame Collection by Larson-Juhl will celebrate your artwork and photographs with elegance and style.

“We are excited to introduce this Biltmore-inspired frame collection to Wayne, PA! Vanderbilt’s love of fine art and respect for the environment is evident in the frame designs and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring that feeling into our client’s homes,” says Pasha Sourbeer, Manager of The Great Frame Up

Biltmore Estate™, first envisioned and later commissioned by George Washington Vanderbilt III, was the most ambitious home ever conceived in America and took over six years and an army of artisans to create. It was completed in 1895, with 250 rooms, four acres of floor space, and was filled with a priceless collection of furnishings and artwork. Vanderbilt’s love for fine art was evident as he and his new bride traveled the world collecting fine art and frames to fill their home. His exceptional collection includes original works from masters such as Pierre-August Renoir and John Singer Sergeant.

After enjoying the estate for more than 35 years privately, the Vanderbilt family opened the estate to the public to generate tourism in March 1930. Since that time, Biltmore has been available for public tours - allowing Biltmore’s legacy to live on. During WWII, Biltmore housed priceless artworks from the National Gallery of Art for safekeeping. In 1963, Biltmore was named a National Historic Landmark. Today, Biltmore welcomes more than 1 million guests per year and continues to inspire all who see it.

Vanderbilt envisioned his estate as an eco-friendly environment; keeping in line with that focus, The Biltmore Collection by Larson-Juhl is the company’s first Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) ™ certified frame collection. To earn PEFC certification, the lumber used in the manufacturing process must come from well-managed, sustainable forests.
